
UPDATE: Reno Casino Shooting Leaves 3 Dead, 3 Others Injured
UPDATE: Three people were killed and three injured in Monday morning's shooting outside Reno's Grand Sierra Resort and Casino.
A responding police officer shot the alleged shooter, who was then transported to a hospital in severe condition.
The investigation's main agency, the Sparks Police Department, reports that the shooting happened close to the valet in front of the casino. The suspect brandished a handgun and pointed it, but the weapon malfunctioned.
After adjusting his firearm, the culprit shot a crowd of individuals several times. At the site, one person passed away. Another person passed away after four others were taken to a hospital. Since then, one of those victims has been set free.
Following a gunfight with a casino security guard in the parking lot, the shooter opened fire on a passing vehicle, killing the driver. Before the officer shot and injured him, he finally fired at a Reno police vehicle.
The attack's motivation has not yet been revealed. Authorities don't think the assailant was acquainted with his victims.
According to the police, the shooter planned to infiltrate the casino.
“We are heartbroken by the senseless violence that occurred in our parking area earlier today,” officials from the Grand Sierra Resort said in a statement. “Our thoughts are with the victims and all those affected by this tragic incident.
“We are incredibly grateful for the swift and courageous response by our armed security team, whose immediate actions helped prevent further harm,” the statement continued. “We also want to thank the Reno Police Department for their rapid assistance and coordination, which was instrumental in quickly eliminating the threat and protecting lives.”
According to the casino, it is still operational and "actively working to support" any patrons and employees affected by the shooting.
EARLIER: According to a local report, gunfire broke out Monday morning outside the Grand Sierra Resort and Casino in Reno. A number of individuals were hurt, including the perpetrator, who was arrested.
The KTVN-TV/Reno station reports that the shooting started at 7:25 a.m. on Monday. The initial report of an active shooter near the valet area of the facility prompted responses from Nevada State Police, Reno Fire, Washoe County sheriff's deputies, and Reno police.
The suspect, who was only identified as an adult male, and the Reno police engaged in gunfire when they arrived. Following his arrest, he was transferred to a nearby hospital with unspecified injuries.
Since several allegedly drove themselves to medical facilities, the precise number of victims has not been made public.
Located a short distance from Reno-Tahoe International Airport, the Grand Sierra boasts the largest casino floor in northern Nevada. Its gaming area is 80,000 square feet.
