Union Representing Casino Workers Files Lawsuit Against Donald Trump, Elon Musk

Following their Monday night talk on X, a major organization that represents employees in the casino business nationwide has launched a lawsuit against Elon Musk and former President Donald Trump.

The International Union, United Automobile, Aerospace and Agricultural Implement Workers of America, officially known as the United Auto Workers (UAW), is a union that primarily represents workers in the automotive manufacturing industry. However, the sixth-largest labor union in the US with about a million members also represents thousands of workers in the gaming business.

The UAW filed federal labor charges with the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB) on Tuesday in response to the Trump-Musk chat on X's Spaces. According to the union's complaint, Trump and Musk spoke in a way that would "intimidate and threaten" employees of the two billionaire enterprises.

Trump and Musk's Conversation

After Trump's conversation with Musk was delayed due to technological difficulties, the UAW took issue with Trump's apparent approval of Musk's dismissal of employees who had threatened to go on strike after Musk took over Twitter, which he renamed X.

"I observe what you perform. "You want to quit?" you ask as you enter. I won't name the company, but when they go on strike, you tell them it's alright because you're all leaving. All of you have left. "So, all of you have left," Trump remarked to Musk.

Following his $44 billion acquisition of Twitter, the CEO of Tesla and SpaceX fired around 80% of the company's staff, bringing down the total number of employees from slightly under 8,000 to 1,500.

President of the UAW Shawn Fain, a fierce Democrat and opponent of Trump and Musk, claimed that Trump's apparent celebration of Musk's widespread layoffs amounted to intimidation of workers.

"When we say Donald Trump is a scab, this is what we mean,” Fain said in a statement announcing the NLRB filing. “When we say Trump stands against everything our union stands for, this is what we mean.”

According to federal law, employers are not allowed to fire employees for just wanting to form an organization or go on strike.

"Donald Trump will always side against workers standing up for themselves, and he will always side with billionaires like Elon Musk,” Fain continued. “Both Trump and Musk want working-class people to sit down and shut up, and they laugh about it openly. It’s disgusting, illegal, and totally predictable from these two clowns.”

In March 2023, Fain was elected president of UAW. Since then, he has garnered a great deal of attention, chief among them being the September 2023 UAW strike at all three of the "Big Three" automakers: Ford, General Motors, and Stellantis (formerly Fiat Chrysler).

Fain's remarks were addressed by Musk on his X platform.

“The last two UAW presidents went to prison for bribery & corruption. Based on recent news, it looks like this guy will join them,” Musk tweeted.

Members of UAW Gaming

The UAW represents a variety of casino personnel, such as cage cashiers, casino hosts, keno and simulcast employees, table game dealers, slot techs and attendants, poker dealers, and poker clerks. Numerous significant areas, including Las Vegas, Atlantic City, the Baltimore-Washington corridor, Connecticut, Florida, Indiana, Ohio, and Rhode Island, are home and workplaces for the union's casino employees.

Approximately 10,000 UAW members work in the US casino business, according to the union. The UAW is pushing for legislation to be changed in gambling states that still permit indoor smoking so that casinos and other gaming establishments are compelled to become smoke-free establishments.

Prior to his announcement of his candidacies withdrawal, President Joe Biden received the support of the UAW for the 2024 race. The union then supported Kamala Harris in the election scheduled for November 5.
